According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of four seniors fall each year in the U.S. Falls often lead to emergency visits and serious injuries such as broken bones, head injuries, and hip fractures. Fortunately, there are many ways older adults can reduce their risk of falls and keep themselves safe in and out of their homes. Here are five fall prevention tips for seniors.
1. Wear the Right Socks and Shoes
While socks can be comfortable, they pose a significant slipping risk. Therefore, seniors should invest in non-slip socks with grips on the soles or wear properly fitting shoes with good support. Heels, flip flops, floppy slopers, and worn shoes that are long past their primes are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
2. Stay Active
Older adults who are active are less likely to fall than those who lead sedentary lifestyles. By engaging in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day, seniors can strengthen their bones, build muscle, improve balance, and avoid falls. They don’t have to participate in strenuous exercises as low-impact workouts like walking around the neighborhood and yoga will do the trick.
3. Eat Healthy
As we age, our bones weaken and make us more prone to falls and other injuries. For this reason, a nutritious diet that strengthens them is essential. Seniors should stick to foods like leafy green veggies, beans, bananas, and others that are loaded with calcium, and vitamin D. Dietary supplements may be an option if they’re unable to get all the nutrients they need from their meals.
4. Watch for Warning Signs
Some seniors are more susceptible to falls than others so it’s a good idea to watch for warning signs. Older adults should visit the eye doctor regularly to catch vision problems and resolve them early on. It’s also in their best interest to consult their primary care doctor about any medications they may be taking that could compromise their balance and stability. Their doctor may prescribe alternative options that pose less of a fall risk.
5. Create a Safe Home
Since falls at home are common, older adults should take the time to eliminate hazards and senior-proof their space. Ample lighting, grab bars, the removal of rugs and clutter, and a commitment to one-floor living can all help. Most homes weren’t built with senior needs in mind so it’s important to modify them appropriately.
